- This study explores the critical role of local government leadership in ensuring the sustainability of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) within the King Sabatha Dalindyebo Municipality, with a particular focus on Mthatha. As the global community transitions from the MDGs to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is essential to assess the contributions of local government structures in the effective implementation and long-term sustainability of these initiatives. Using the qualitative approach, the research examines the leadership strategies, challenges, and successes experienced by municipal officials in Mthatha, based on interviews conducted with the municipal employees. The findings reveal that strong, visionary leadership and collaborative governance have been essential in advancing MDG-related projects, particularly in education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. However, challenges such as inadequate resources, political instability, and limited community engagement hinder achieving sustainable outcomes. The study concludes that while local leadership has made significant strides in supporting the MDGs, there is a need for enhanced capacity-building, improved coordination with national policies, and increased community participation to ensure lasting impact. Recommendations are made for future local government strategies that align with the SDGs and promote long-term sustainability in the KSD region.
