- Description: The aim of the study was to explore the roles that principals play in the functionality of the South African schools. The Instructional Leadership Theory was used, and a case study design was followed. Detailed individual and group discussions were done to get rich data from 5 participants from 5 purposively carefully chosen high schools. Through thematic analysis of the interviews, three major findings emerged. One of the key findings was that school principals in this study relied overwhelmingly on the old knowledge they acquired from their junior degrees, and from observations, to lead the schools. As such, there was a leadership gap in their daily execution of roles. This study concludes that school principals are not as capacitated and well developed to perform their everyday roles in South African schools. It was recommended that the Department of Education offer on-going development plans to up-skill the school principals so that they can be professional and administratively ready for their roles. , Thesis (Masters) -- Faculty of Education, 2023

- Description: The study was conducted in one education district of the Eastern Cape Province. The study aimed to explore the challenges experienced by teachers and learners concerning the implementation of CAPS in secondary schools of the Eastern Cape Province. The study reviewed to improve the implementation of CAPS in secondary schools. The cognitive constructivist theory was used in this study. The study adopted a qualitative research approach through which a case study design was chosen. In-depth individual interviews were conducted to attain rich and accurate data from ten teachers, five principals, five heads of departments and five learners who participated in this study: from five secondary schools of Chris Hani West district. A total of nine themes became observable in this study through the analysis of the interviews. One of the key findings was that the Department of Basic Education did not involve teachers when changing the curriculum. The study concludes that issues such as learner-teacher ratio, overcrowded classrooms, insufficient resources, promotion and progression policy, syllabus coverage, lack of teachers with inclusive education, lack of parental involvement in learners’ work and Language of Learning and Teaching hinder the quality of teaching and learning processes. It was suggested that the Department of Basic Education, parents, principals and learners should collaborate to address the hindrances to effective teaching and learning. , Thesis (Masters) -- Faculty of Education, 2022

Knowledge, Attitudes and Perceptions Towards HIV Testing Among IsiXhosa-Speaking Men in The Zithulele Catchment Area of The Rural Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

- Description: BACKGROUND South Africa carries the largest burden of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the world, with over 7.9 million people infected and over 70 000 HIV-related deaths in 2019. Men are 25% more likely to die from Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) compared to women, even though women are more likely to be infected. Despite these numbers, only 24.1% of HIV-positive men compared to 64.8% of HIV-positive women were aware of their status. Statistics indicate that men in South Africa are not testing for HIV until it is too late. In order to focus efforts on the prevention of HIV transmission, there is a need to understand why men are not accessing HIV testing and treatment services earlier. This study aims to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions towards HIV testing of isiXhosa-speaking men in the Zithulele catchment area of the rural Eastern Cape. METHODS This was a qualitative study using the phenomenological approach. It was conducted among a purposive sample of isiXhosa-speaking men from the Zithulele catchment area, in the OR Tambo district of the Eastern Cape Province. Ten semi-structured interviews and one focus group were conducted in isiXhosa. Interviews were audiorecorded, transcribed, and translated into English. The interviews were thematically analysed using an inductive approach. RESULTS Participants from the study had a good understanding of HIV and HIV transmission. They perceived HIV infection as a death sentence, a consequence of immoral behaviour and an indication of failure as man. Reluctance to test for HIV was due to the perception that testing hastens the onset of symptoms and death, whereas disclosure of an HIV-positive status was described as difficult due to the fear of stigmatization. Some of the barriers to accessing HIV testing services included masculine norms, the belief that sickness is equated with weakness, a perceived lack of confidentiality at health facilities and how female-dominated clinics were not male-friendly spaces. Suggestions to improve HIV testing among men included improving targeted education, home-based testing services and utilizing traditional meetings to address men. CONCLUSION The findings of this study may suggest that healthy men in the Zithulele catchment area of the rural Eastern Cape are not accessing HIV testing and treatment services. The reasons behind this reluctance include false beliefs around HIV and testing, the fear of discrimination, disruption of masculine norms and reluctance to access care at female-dominated health facilities. The Effect of Using English as A Language of Learning and Teaching on Learner Academic Performance in Senior Phase of Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province

- Description: The study sought to investigate the effect of using English as a language of learning and teaching on learner academic performance in the senior phase of Mthatha District, Eastern Cape Province. This study employed a mixed-method approach. The researcher used both qualitative and quantitative methods to collect data. The study was conducted in 3 semi-rural senior secondary schools that were conveniently selected. The quantitative part employed Likert-type scale questionnaires that were administered to 10 Mathematics (Math), 10 Natural Sciences (NS) and 10 Social Sciences (SS) teachers making a total of 30 teachers and a total of 30 learners from grades 8 and 9. For the qualitative part, nine (9) teachers and eighteen (18) learners from the selected schools were interviewed. The 18 teachers in three schools were observed as they taught Grade 8 and 9 learners in their respective classes. Qualitative data were, thus, gathered through interviews and observations. Quantitative data was collected using Likert-type scale questionnaires and was analysed using descriptive statistics and Microsoft Excel. The voice recorded qualitative data from the participant’s responses were transcribed and analysed manually through coding, forming categories and themes that were used for data presentation. These are some of the findings: The majority of learners do not understand English, therefore, it was difficult for them to understand the teaching and learning of the selected subjects in Senior Phase (SP) using English as the language of learning and teaching (LoLT); Although the majority of learners reported that they usually use English as a LoLT and their home language when learning the selected subjects, they still struggled to ask and answer questions in English in a classroom and during examinations; Learners who experience difficulties in learning the selected subjects through the use of English as a LoLT in SP, were taught in their home language (isiXhosa) by their teachers; English and isiXhosa, in the form of code-switching, were used when teaching the selected subjects; Inadequate teacher training and preparation made it more difficult for the learners to perform well in the selected subjects. The study recommends that: The Department of Education should conduct enough workshops to help HOD’s and teachers who teach the selected subjects to keep abreast of new developments in these subjects. These should be integrated with appropriate teaching strategies and learning and teaching support materials. Detection of extended spectrum beta‑lactamase genes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from patients in rural Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

- Description: The proliferation of extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa represent a major public health threat. In this study, we evaluated the antimicrobial resistance patterns of P. aeruginosa strains and characterized the ESBLs and Metallo- β-lactamases (MBL) produced. Strains of P. aeruginosa cultured from patients who attended Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital and other clinics in the four district municipalities of the Eastern Cape between August 2017 and May 2019 were identified; antimicrobial susceptibility testing was carried out against thirteen clinically relevant antibiotics using the BioMérieux VITEK 2 and confirmed by Beckman autoSCAN-4 System. Real-time PCR was done using Roche Light Cycler 2.0 to detect the presence of ESBLs; blaSHV, blaTEM and blaCTX-M genes; and MBLs; blaIMP, blaVIM. Strains of P. aeruginosa demonstrated resistance to wide-ranging clinically relevant antibiotics including piperacillin (64.2%), followed by aztreonam (57.8%), cefepime (51.5%), ceftazidime (51.0%), piperacillin/tazobactam (50.5%), and imipenem (46.6%). A total of 75 (36.8%) multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains were observed of the total pool of isolates. The blaTEM, blaSHV and blaCTX-M was detected in 79.3%, 69.5% and 31.7% isolates (n = 82), respectively. The blaIMP was detected in 1.25% while no blaVIM was detected in any of the strains tested. The study showed a high rate of MDR P. aeruginosa in our setting. The vast majority of these resistant strains carried blaTEM and blaSHV genes. Continuous monitoring of antimicrobial resistance and strict compliance towards infection prevention and control practices are the best defence against spread of MDR P. aeruginosa.

- Description: Stress is a global phenomenon that affects everyone regardless of gender, resources and environment. Although this phenomenon is well researched, teachers’ experiences of stress remains a worrying challenge particularly to schools’ effectiveness. This study sought to establish how monitoring and management mechanism that can assist teachers to cope with stress challenges. These are some of the recommendation: that the school disciplinary committee should be trained in various disciplinary measures that may be implemented in the school to curb learner ill-discipline and lack of commitment, that working relationship should be built between schools and the Department of Basic Education, motivational speakers and educational counsellors should meet with all learners on a regular basis to motivate them to have high desire for and interest in education and to build their self-confidence in the classroom, providing all the schools with healthy environment in classrooms, provision of learning and teaching materials to all schools, schools should set up an effective school-parents partnership in order to promote a safe drug and alcohol free environment, employ enough teachers in all secondary schools and the Department of Basic Education at district level should make room for stress management workshops for teachers.

Predictors of institutional delivery service utilization among women of reproductive age in Senegal: a population-based study

- Description: Background: In Senegal, sub-Saharan Africa, many women continue to die from pregnancy and childbirth complications. Even though health facility delivery is a key intervention to reducing maternal death, utilization is low. There is a dearth of evidence on determinants of health facility delivery in Senegal. Therefore, this study investigated the predictors of health facility-based delivery utilization in Senegal. Methods: Data from the 2017 Senegal Continuous Survey were extracted for this study, and approximately 11,487 ever-married women aged 15–49 years participated. Chi-square test was used to select significant variables and multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify statistically significant predictors at a 95% confidence interval with a 0.05 p-value using Stata version 14 software. Results: Facility-based delivery utilization was 77.7% and the main predictors were maternal educational status (primary school Adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR] = 1.44, 95% CI; 1.14–1.83; secondary school aOR = 1.62, 95% CI; 1.17– 2.25), husband’s educational status (primary school aOR = 1.65, 95% CI; 1.24–2.20, secondary school aOR = 2.17, 95% CI; 1.52–3.10), maternal occupation (agricultural-self-employed aOR = 0.77, 95% CI; 0.62–0.96), ethnicity (Poular aOR = 0.74, 95% CI; 0.56–0.97), place of residence (rural aOR = 0.57, 95% CI; 0.43, 0.74), media exposure (yes aOR = 1.26, 95% CI; 1.02–1.57), economic status (richest aOR = 5.27, 95% CI; 2.85–9.73), parity (seven and above aOR =0.46, 95% CI; 0.34–0.62), wife beating attitude (refuse aOR =1.23, 95% CI; 1.05–1.44) and skilled antenatal care (ANC) (yes aOR = 4.34, 95% CI; 3.10–6.08). Conclusion: Uptake of health facility delivery services was seen among women who were educated, exposed to media, wealthy, against wife-beating, attended ANC by skilled attendants and had educated husbands. On the other hand, women from ethnic groups like Poular, those working in agricultural activities, living in rural setting, and those who had more delivery history were less likely to deliver at a health facility. Therefore, there is the need to empower women by encouraging them to use skilled ANC services in order for them to gain the requisite knowledge they need to enhance their utilization of health facility delivery, whiles at the same time, removing socio-economic barriers to access to health facility delivery that occur from low education, poverty and rural dwelling.

- Description: ABSTRACT The purpose of the present study was to explore prevalence and implications of telecommunication counselling. Available literature suggests that telecommunication counselling may have far-reaching implications in the mental health practice in general, and particularly in psychology. This study was guided by the social information processing theoretical framework. A total number of 26 mental health practitioners aged from 22 to 45 were selected using purposive sampling. In this study questionnaires were distributed to respondents through email, email was also used to collect the research data. Research ethics, such as confidentiality, anonymity, and voluntary participation, were strictly observed. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23 was used to analyse the data. The analysed data are presented in frequency tables and graphs. This study found that there are effectiveness and efficiency factors associated with the use telecommunication counselling. Furthermore, the findings imply that the popularity of this type of counselling has been growing steadily in the past few years, especially in urban areas. - Description: Substance abuse is common amongst patients attending primary healthcare settings. Despite the substantial impact on one’s health, substance abuse is often underdiagnosed by primary care providers owing to a lack of training and time for screening. Self-reported screening tools are easy to administer and efficient to make a substance abuse diagnosis in primary care settings. Comorbid mental illness and intimate partner violence are common amongst patients presenting with substance abuse in primary care. An early diagnosis and a brief behavioural change counselling are effective in managing substance abuse before it develops into dependency. A brief motivational communication rather than a confrontation during substance abuse screening, counselling and treatment is important to achieve optimum patient outcomes. - Description: The study was formulated to tap into the future of HRM given the disruptions arising from the Covid-119 pandemic as well as the progression of the global technological environment to the fourth industrial revolution. The aim of the study was to: the Covid-19 induced HRM practices underpinning future organizational competitiveness. A literature review strategy was adopted to achieve the study objective. The study established seven emerging themes to inform HRM practices for the competitiveness of organizations in future following the Covid-19 disturbances. These themes are: primacy of HRM, increased cyber influences, digitalization, remote HRM, human-machine interface skills, human-organisation strategic links as well as human-technology interface competencies. Based on the study findings, the study recommended HRM departments to move to HR 4.0 through the adoption of industry 4.0 technologies, increased automation, and digitalization as well as strengthen virtualization systems.

- Description: Background: The South African department of health recently introduced subdermal Implanon contraceptive implant with the aim to reduce teenage pregnancy and maternal mortality. First used in all public healthcare facilities across the country since early 2014, this method of contraception has been described as highly effective. However, some women have reported unbearable side effects, forcing them to remove the contraceptive implant early before its expiry date. Negligible emphasis has been placed on staff training and development to equip the nurses with new protocol and policies on Implanon. Objectives: The objective of this study was to explore experiences of women using Implanon as method of contraception at a selected primary healthcare facility in KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. Methods: A qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study design was used. A purposive sampling technique was used and a sample of seven women aged between 15 and 50 years was selected for this study. Semi-structured interviews were used in the data collection process. The Tesch’s method for data coding and data analysis was utilised. Necessary ethical measures were taken to ensure that the study is trustworthy. The study was conducted at Community Health Centre, KwaZulu-Natal between June 2017 and December 2018. Results: The findings showed that some participants were still willing to continue using this method of contraception regardless of the unwanted side effects. Major side effects reported were heavy menstrual bleeding, pain and discomfort, weight loss, insomnia and decreased sexual interest, which resulted in most participants stopping the use of Implanon. Conclusion: Most of the participants’ experience unwanted side effects because of poor screening, counselling and support. There is a clear demand to develop a screening tool and facilitate training of healthcare workers when initiating the use of Implanon. - Description: This study aimed to determine the lecturers’ perspective on the role of Academic Staff Development (ASD) in enhancing and upskilling lecturers' teaching practices and strategies to improve student learning. The study was undertaken at a comprehensive HE Institution in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. This study was based on the critical theory which advances change, transformation, emancipation, contradiction, alienation and domination, tenets that academic staff development also advocates. Academic development is supported by principles upheld by critical theory, for example, empowerment, transformation and democracy. For this study, the population comprised those lecturers who attended academic staff development workshops as from 2015 to 2017 at the HDI. In line with the Quanti-Quali mixed explanatory sequential approach, I collected quantitative data from academics using questionnaires; followed by interviews to collect qualitative data. The results showed that the majority appreciated academic staff development as a career changing experience as it capacitated them to teach, grounding them in pedagogical content knowledge in addition to their discipline specialisations. Some constraining conditions to the uptake of ASD at the HDI emerged from the study. Due to the privileging of research over teaching, ASD was seen as a waste of their research time. Institutional environment constraints such as huge workloads, constraining departmental cultures; poor timing of ASD workshops, poor institutional communication about ASD activities and lack of monitoring of implementing those skills, were classified as hindrances. Finally, it is clear that lecturers are made, not born. Recommendations are that it must be compulsory for all academics to attend ASD workshops at least bi-annually. The literature review was based on existing knowledge in the teaching and learning of Euclidean geometry. The study was built on analyzing the effective teaching strategies based on the teacher’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) in Euclidean Geometry (EG). Shulman and Ma’s perspective on teachers’ competencies and knowledge of Mathematics was used as the theoretical framework of the study. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was adopted for the study. A purposive convenience sampling technique was used to select research sites and participants. The main instruments used were questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, classroom observation schedules, and document analysis. Quantitative data was analyzed descriptively utilizing tables and graphs. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic data analysis. The various findings were interpreted through the literature and the theoretical framework. It was found that learners have a poor foundation in geometry and the methods teachers employed to teach Euclidean Geometry were inappropriate. Recommendations and suggestions were made. It is hoped that these recommendations would be noted by the appropriate stakeholders to ensure that improvement in the teaching and learning of Euclidean Geometry is achieved in our secondary schools to help matriculates’ obtain good marks in the final certification examination. Geometry Proficiency Of Grade 11 Learners In Alfred Nzo Education District, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

- Description: This is a mixed method research study that aims to investigate the Geometry Proficiency of Grade 11 learners in rural senior secondary schools of Mount Frere in Alfred Nzo Education District, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The study is oriented in interpretive paradigm and utilizes both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study was conducted in 10 rural senior secondary schools that were selected using convenient sampling technique. The quantitative part employed a survey that consisted of 19 mathematics teachers and total of 162 Grade 11 learners. Out of 10 rural senior secondary schools, three were purposively selected with their three (3) classes, three (3) Mathematics teachers and three (3) Heads of Mathematics and Science Divisions for qualitative part. Questionnaires were administered to 19 Mathematics teachers and 162 learners. Three teachers in three different schools were observed as they taught Grade 11 learners Circle Geometry in their respective classes. Qualitative data through observations, interviews and document analysis were gathered. The study targeted to provide an in-depth understanding of the Geometry Proficiency of the learners in the sample. The quantitative data were analysed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 22. The study found the failure of teachers to instate teaching strategies appropriate for generating acceptable levels of Geometry Proficiency and a myriad of challenges that were experienced by learners. These included inadequate preparation by teachers, lack of learning and teaching support materials, the manner in which Geometry was taught, learners' problem solving skills, absenteeism, illiterate and impoverished parents, and failure to understand the utilitarian value of Geometry. The study recommends that Van Hiele’s levels of Geometric thought as well as the Van Hiele’s phases of learning be implemented in the schools particularly in rural schools. These should be integrated with appropriate teaching strategies and learner teaching support materials, particularly the ones that include practical investigations. , Thesis (D.Ed) -- Faculty of Education Sciences, 2020

Critique of the International Criminal Court's Approach to International Criminal Justice in Selected African Jurisdictions

- Description: In 2002, the requisite number of ratifications to the Rome Statute was met, the International Criminal Court (ICC) was subsequently born. Just 16 years into its existence, the court finds itself under threat from the sovereign countries that at one stage, expressed their desire to improve the fight against impunity through a permanent international criminal court. But what has caused this shift? The ICC has been criticised for being a pro-African prosecution forum, this inference is drawn from the demographical distribution of the cases before the ICC that puts a significant majority of cases in Africa whereas other possible jurisdictions with similar cases have been left untouched by the ICC until recently. This study seeks to provide an analysis of the relationship between African states and the ICC. The study will provide a historical perspective on the development of International Criminal Law leading to the establishment of the International Criminal Court. This is followed by an analysis of the relations of the ICC and African states through three case studies of Kenya, South Africa and Sudan. The study will go further to provide an analysis of challenges that the ICC has faced with dealing with cases before and finally seek to explore the possibility of an alternative forum to prosecute perpetrators of international crimes centred in the African continent. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law, 2020

Essential medicine selection during the COVID-19 pandemic: Enabling access in uncharted territory

- Description: The COVID-19 pandemic requires urgent decisions regarding treatment policy in the face of rapidly evolving evidence. In response, the South African Essential Medicines List Committee established a subcommittee to systematically review and appraise emerging evidence, within very short timelines, in order to inform the National Department of Health COVID-19 treatment guidelines. To date, the subcommittee has reviewed 14 potential treatments, and made recommendations based on local context, feasibility, resource requirements and equity. Here we describe the rapid review and evidence-to-decision process, using remdesivir and dexamethasone as examples. Our experience is that conducting rapid reviews is a practical and efficient way to address medicine policy questions under pandemic conditions.
