Smith Institute of Ichthyology; No. 56 , A list of the scientific and recommended English and Afrikaans common names of fishes found in freshwater habitats of southern Africa is presented. Notes explaining the additions and changes made to the list of Jackson (1975) are provided. The list includes 259 species of which 201 (78%) are indigenous primary and secondary freshwater fishes, 34 (13%) are of marine origin and 4 (2%) are diadromous. Twenty alien species (8%) are also included. The number of species has increased by 47 (22%). Of these 47 species, 32 are strictly freshwater fishes and 15 are marine species. Two new alien species are added to the list.

A new Paramphilius from the Little Scarcies River basin in Guinea, is the third species of the genus from that area. It has a relatively deeper body and longer fins than other upper Guinean Paramphilius species. The new species of Doumea from the Cross River in Nigeria and Cameroons is characterised by a long predorsal length and a relatively short stout caudal peduncle.

New distributional data were collected for Barbus aeneus, Barbus anoplus and Labeo umbratus. Additionally, the exotics Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus were added to the ichthyofauna known from the drainage. An annotated list of species either collected or historically known from the drainage is presented. Barbus aeneus (Burchell, 1822) is recognized as the valid name for the smallmouth yellowfish and a senior synonym of Barbus holubi Steindachner, 1894.
