  • Description: This group is the Chief's own choir. The chief Bathoen has always been interested in music and has composed several songs for choirs. He possesses a grand piano himself and keeps up a choir at his home, Kanye. He frequently takes his choir by lorry and car around the country to give concerts elsewhere. His style of composition reflects the insititutional type of song which has been popular among students for several years employing the usual common chords. Interest in the folk music of the country having been discouraged by their teachers as socially inferior, this style of singing was intended to take its place among the 'educated'. Concert song.

  • Description: The performers were all about 18 or thereabouts. This group wore red blankets with rows of white braid on the girls' skirts. The girls wore very attractive circlets of beads on the head, passing over the forehead and bead chin straps, also a head band passing over the top of the head and round the base of the skull. The sexes were divided dancing at right angles to each other and the girls kept up a shrill high descant. The men danced in a circle as tightly packed sardines. The main feature of the boys' costume were the immense number of strands of beads wound about the hips to a depth of 18 or more. The edges of the blankets were also beaded. The girls also wore three swathings of beads around the hips. 3 Gubura dances for young men.

  • Description: A girl in the crowd was wearing a circlet of cowrie shells placed flat on the crown of her head. Her hair was covered with red orchre. Another girl wore several tubular bead girdles, beautifully worked, from one which hung a short bead apron. This, they say, is the tribal dress of the Tonga, which is seen at its best on the South Rhodesian side of the river or further up the river. This village had been much affected by the activities of the local political body known as the African National Congress (Kongolos), members of which had tried to persuade the Tonga that the waters of the Kariba Dam would not rise, and collected fees from the villagers. Mankuntu dance song for boys and girls with 3 drums (Gogogo, Musunta, Mpati). Open and pegged, and played by hands.
