- Description: The development of environmentally sustainable plant and fish production in aquaponic systems requires a complete understanding of the systems’ biological components. In order to better understand the role of microorganisms in this association, we studied the bacterial communities in the dry, root, and mineralized zones of a flood-and-drain media bed aquaponic system. Bacterial communities were characterized using metabarcoding of the V3-V4 16S rRNA regions obtained from paired-end Illumina MiSeq reads. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes accounted for more than 90% of the total community in the dry zone and the effluent water. These phyla also accounted for more than 68% of the total community in the root and mineralized zones. The genera Massilia, Mucilaginibacter, Mizugakiibacter, and Rhodoluna were most dominant in the dry, root, and mineralized zones and in the effluent water, respectively. The number of shared operational taxonomic units (OTUs) for the three zones was 241, representing 7.15% of the total observed OTUs. The number of unique OTUs in samples from dry zone, root zone, mineralized zone, and effluent water was 485, 638, 445, and 383, respectively. The samples from the root zone harbored more diverse communities than either the dry or mineralized zones. This study is the first to report on the bacterial community within the zones of a flood-and-drain media bed. Thus, this information will potentially accelerate studies on other microbial communities involved in the bioconversion of nitrogen compounds and mineralization within these types of aquaponic systems.

- Description: Background: As science and modern technology have brought many advances, we have also come to overshoot planetary boundaries, while still falling short of development goals to eradicate poverty and inequality. A growing recognition of the complexity of development problems and contexts calls for new framings, including a new approach to monitoring and evaluation (M and E) as one of the mechanisms by which modern societies aim to steer towards a more sustainable future. New approaches to M and E mean new skills for the M and E practitioner. Objectives: This article proposed a framing for M and E skills, comprising of technical, relational and transformational (T-R-T) competences. Method: Adapted from the literature, this competence framework was tested in a broader learning needs assessment and then applied retrospectively to author’s experience in developmental evaluations in complex social–ecological contexts in southern Africa. Results: The emerging insights were that not only technical competence is needed, but also relational competence that goes beyond interpersonal skills, to enable the production and uptake of evaluation findings. In addition, the limitations of mainstream M and E methods in the face of complexity seemed to create a need for ‘transformational’ competence, which included evaluators’ ability to develop credible M and E alternatives. Conclusion: The T-R-T framework helped to advance the notions of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ skills and expanded on existing M and E competence frameworks. Recommendations included a call for innovative educational and professional development approaches to develop relational and transformational competencies, in addition to training for technical competence.

- Description: Physical stressors play a crucial role in the progression of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Here we report a heterogeneous physical stress induced IBS rat model which shows depression and subsequent modulation of IBS by oral treatment of thymol. Oral administration of Thymol reduces the stress induced IBS significantly altering the stress induced gastrointestinal hypermotility, prolonged the whole gut transit time, and increased abdominal withdrawal reflex suggesting gastrointestinal hypermotility and visceral discomfort caused the onset of depression. Immunohistochemical analysis in small intestine and colon of rats shows the decreased 5-HT3AR expression level while thymol treatment normalized the 5-HT3AR expression in the stressed rats. Molecular docking studies showed that thymol competes with endogenous serotonin and an antagonist, Tropisetron and all have similar binding energies to 5-HT3AR. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that thymol and tropisetron might have similar effects on 5-HT3AR. Our study suggest that thymol improves IBS symptoms through 5-HT3AR, could be useful for the treatment of IBS.

Using formative research, CARE USA examined the underlying social, individual and structural factors influencing married girls’ early first birth and participation in alternative opportunities (such as education or economic pursuits) in Bangladesh. Methods: In July of 2017, researchers conducted in-depth interviews of community members in two sub-districts of northern Bangladesh (Kurigram Sadar and Rajarhat). Participants (n = 127) included adolescent girls (both married and unmarredi), husbands of adolescent girls, influential adults in the girls’ lives, community leaders, and health providers. All interviews were transcribed, coded and organized using Dedoose software. Results: Participants recognize the health benefits of delaying first birth, but stigma around infertility and contraceptive use, pressure from mothers-in-law and health provider bias interfere with a girl’s ability to delay childbearing. Girls’ social isolation, lack of mobility or autonomy, and inability to envision alternatives to early motherhood compound the issue; provider bias may also prevent access to methods. While participants agree that pursuit of education and economic opportunities are important, better futures for girls do not necessarily supersede their marital obligations of childrearing and domestic chores. Conclusions: Findings indicate the need for a multi-level approach to delaying early birth and stimulating girls’ participation in economic and educational pursuits. Interventions must mitigate barriers to reproductive health care; train adolescent girls on viable economic activities; and provide educational opportunities for girls. Effective programs should also address contextual issues by including immediate members of the girls’ families, particularly the husband and mother-in-law.

The students attended the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, a historically black institution in a rural and under-resourced setting. A framework of New Literacy Studies (NLS) was used to understand students’ self-reported reading practices and the links between these and their identities. Tools provided by Gee, 2005, Gee, 2011 were applied to conduct a CDA of focus group discussions. In the ‘We Blacks’ Discourse, interviewees ‘othered’ the idea of reading as not being culturally valued. It was closely allied to the ‘Resistance to Reading’ Discourse, as participants explained that they tended to disregard books and did not enjoy leisure reading. The ‘Better Than Us’ discourse was drawn upon to suggest that reading was associated with attitudes of superiority. These discourses tended to homogenise class and other differences between black students and indicated the ways in which their experiences made adopting academic identities difficult. The analysis suggests that the racism of the past continues to impact students’ reading identities. The article concludes that the effects of these and related discourses require a response across the education sector, and transformative pedagogies might be needed in higher education.

Game theory has been used as a basis to develop models of the competitive assessment strategies that may be used by males either to judge their probability of winning by comparing their own fighting ability to that of their opponents or to persist in contests for a period determined only by their own fighting ability. Conclusions from empirical studies about the means of assessment in their study systems have not, however, always been clear. In view of this, some authors have suggested that utilizing a broad suite of data concerning multiple facets of the study system may assist in gaining clearer insights into animal contests and assessment strategies. The present study integrates data on contest behavior, weapon morphology, residency effects, cost accumulation, and correlates of contest success to test game theory-informed models of competitive assessment strategies in the sexually dimorphic monkey beetle, Heterochelus chiragricus. We found that males of all sizes engaged aggressively in intrasexual contests for mating access to sedentary females, utilizing their hypertrophied hind legs as weapons. Contest outcome was determined by hind femur size and strongly influenced by residency effects. We found mixed support for both pure self-assessment and mutual assessment contest strategies. Such inconclusive findings are not uncommon in animal contest assessment studies, even when contest cost and resource holding power data are contextualized with behavioral and ecological data.

(Pontederiaceae), was recently discovered in South Africa. The two species were considered a single species prior to genetic analysis and interbreeding experiments. The original biological control agent retains the name Eccritotarsus catarinensis (Carvalho) (Heteroptera: Miridae) whereas the new species has been described as Eccritotarsus eichhorniae Henry. In this study, we compared the host specificity, efficacy, and thermal physiologies of the two species. The host specificity of the two species within the Pontederiaceae was very similar and both are safe for release in South Africa. Comparison of the per capita impact of the two species indicated that E. eichhorniae was the more damaging species but this is likely to be influenced by temperature, with E. catarinensis being more effective under lower temperatures and E. eichhorniae being more effective under higher temperatures. Releasing the correct species for the thermal environment of each release site will improve the level of control of water hyacinth in South Africa. This example highlights the need to keep populations of biological control agents from different native range collection localities separate, and to screen for host specificity and efficacy.

- Description: Three different phthalocyanine complexes substituted with carbazoles were conjugated to graphene quantum dots (GQDs) through π–π stacking. The morphologies, sizes, and crystallinities of the nanoconjugates were determined using Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the metallophthalocyanines alone and when conjugated to the GQD nanomaterial in different solvents, as well as after having been embedded in thin films, were studied. The effects of the different substituents and solvents on the NLO properties of the metallophthalocyanines were evaluated. Enhancements in the photophysical properties of the complexes upon conjugation with the nanomaterial were observed. Fluorescence quantum yields, fluorescence lifetimes, triplet quantum yields, and triplet lifetimes were measured for the complexes, and for their conjugates in DMSO.

- Description: This work reports on the synthesis of nanoassemblies of supramolecular hybrids containing detonated nanodiamonds (DNDs) covalently linked to halogenated BODIPY (DNDs-BODIPY) by an amide bond, followed by π–π stacking of 2,9,16,23-tetrakis[4-(N-methylpyridyloxy)]-phthalocyanine (ZnTPPcQ) on the DNDs-BODIPY conjugate, to form nanoassembly represented as ZnTPPcQ-DNDs-BODIPY. ZnTPPcQ-DNDs-BODIPY has a higher singlet oxygen quantum yield of 0.50 in water. Therefore, the construction of a three component photodynamic therapy agent (ZnTPPcQ-DNDs-BODIPY) as a single photosentisiser improved singlet quantum yields of the Pc. Zeta potential studies of ZnTPPcQ-DNDs-BODIPY under various temperatures, concentrations and pH conditions, showed the conjugate is more stable at pHs 2, 4 and 7 and at high concentrations (50 μg/mL) and temperatures (80 °C). ZnTPPcQ-DNDs-BODIPY showed high photodynamic therapy (PDT) activity with a low MCF-7 cell viability of 21 ± 5% when compared to 31 ± 2%, 30 ± 2% and 28 ± 2% cell viability at the highest tested concentration of 50 μg/mL for DNDs, ZnTPPcQ-DND and DNDs-BODIPY, respectively.

- Description: In this study, novel metal-free, zinc and indium 1(4),8(11),15(18),22(25)-tetramorpholine (1a, 2a, 3a respectively) and 2(3), 9(10), 16(17),23(24)-tetramorpholine (1b, 2b, 3b respectively) phthalocyanines were synthesized and complexes 2 and 3 were quaternized. The photophysical and photochemical properties were investigated in dimethylsulfoxide. The non-peripherally substituted phthalocyanines generated higher singlet oxygen than the peripherally substituted phthalocyanines. Photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy activities towards inactivation of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albican were evaluated, where all the quaternized Pcs showed total elimination of the micro-organism with log reductions greater than 9. Though the neutral Pcs had log reductions less than 2, for C. albican the percentage reduction was 68.5% for 2b showing the antifungal properties of the morpholine group.
