- Description: Business organisations are increasingly being exposed to challenging environmental pressures. It has been widely acknowledged and observed that an organisation that crafts an effective organisational culture should be well positioned to react to these threatening changes, and to proactively seize opportunities to adapt and learn. This research study seeks to investigate how an organisational culture that supports organisational capacity for change can be developed. It analyses what a banking organisation’s espoused culture is made up of and how it was formulated. A thematic analysis of how the bank’s aspirational and innovative culture contributes to the organisation’s capacity for change is also presented. Organisational management should take a leading role in developing the values and practices that foster participation, which are then imparted to the entire organisation. The research study thus only focused on analysing the development of organisational culture from the management perspective. An interpretivist research approach was adopted, with a case study design as the research method. Data was gathered through conducting personal interviews with twelve managers from a Retail and Business Banking cluster of one of the big South African banks. Numerous interventions were employed in the organisation to develop espoused values, aspirational culture and to encourage all employees to champion innovations and constantly search for better ways to offer delighting value propositions to clients. The research findings can assist managers and organisational leaders in building their organisational capacity for change through developing an effective organisational culture that supports change initiatives. Since the research study only focused on analysing the development of organisational culture from the perspective of management, further research studies may involve employees as well, due to the fact that everyone is expected to take an active role for an organisation to display the overall capability to effectively respond to a progressively volatile environment. The research was able to reveal how key initiatives that are designed from theoretical constructs can be used to deliver on an innovative organisational culture that contributes to organisational capability for change.

- Description: Contemporarily, one of the major business demands is to extensively understand the impact of technology on the major business strategies and practices. Technologicalship marketing, a concept investigated in this study, emanates from a symbiosis of technology and relationship marketing. Per se, a prevalent area of debate pertains to whether technology promotes or constrains relationships. Outstandingly, this study pursued the technologicalship marketing concept, a new and vital 21st century suggestion in literature (Zineldin, 2000:16). Secondly, against the scarcity of empirical studies in mass marketing environments, the study at hand focused on retail banking client relationships. Lastly, the proposed meta-construct hypothetical model is an essential relationship marketing instrument. The proposed model consists of four major relationship marketing construct categories, namely, personal contact, customer retention, customer switching and relational exchange. At the hand of these constructs, the research primarily aimed to determine the impact of technology on client relationships in e-banking with the focus of closing the gap prevalent in literature on whether technology constraints or supports relationship marketing. The study focused on retail banking client relationships of the four major commercial banks in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa. A survey was conducted of a sample of 200 clients selected using the convenience sampling method. The study hypothesised that technology is resulting in more transactional than relationship marketing in retail banking by constraining social constructions, customer retention and relational exchange, whilst, promoting customer switching mobility. Through the GLM regression analysis method, findings of the study established that technology was to a larger extent supporting relationship marketing. However, it is envisaged that technology is resulting in the disappearance of human contact which is a critical aspect of relationships. Conclusively, the researcher recommended that the only plausible strategy is to endeavour to integrate the human aspect at self-service podiums e.g. mounting of staff at ATM points, which most banks have been doing.

- Description: This thesis, entitled “An analysis of bank risk management and its relevance for the non-bank corporate sector”, investigates the extent to which financial risk management by the banking sector can be applied to the non-bank corporate sector. As banks’ risk management techniques are more sophisticated than those of the non-bank corporate sector we have endeavoured to ascertain the applicability of these established risk management methods to the non-bank corporate sector. The main objectives of this study were to analyse the banking sectors’ risks and management thereof, and compare them to the risks faced by the nonbank corporate sector. This analysis was then used to present a theoretical financial risk management model for the corporate sector. This analysis was conducted using qualitative research. The thesis engaged in an in-depth investigation of financial risk management through a documentary, literature and media analysis. It was elucidated that not all companies face the same financial risks and therefore each company requires its own unique financial risk management model. Furthermore, it was established that there are several risks that both banks and non-bank corporates are subjected to. However, the management of these risks is not necessarily the same for these two types of institutes. This thesis concludes by putting forward a financial risk management model which presents all the possible financial risks that non-bank corporates may face.

- Description: In this research customer service excellence in First National Bank in the Port Elizabeth metropole was investigated. From the industry and competitor analysis it can be concluded that banking is a highly competitive industry that is undergoing constant change because of fierce competition. The literature survey was aimed at placing the concept of service quality, excellence and customer loyalty which lead to customer retention into perspective. The concept of total quality management outlining the specific requirements of how the concept can be utilised and how a service quality programme can be implemented was discussed. The purpose of the empirical study was to test customers’ perceptions of service provided by First National Bank and to contribute with useful information to the bank studied. From these findings improvements and recommendations were suggested as a guideline for any bank to follow to improve customer service levels. The empirical study results were satisfactory and informative. The meaningful positive responses that were identified can be utilised as competitive marketing strategies by FNB. The meaningful negative concerns the bank should consider improving upon and attention should be given to the language and SBU differences outlined.
